Only Yesterday

Only yesterday, they lifted the garden table
placed it here, where today the sun shines.

The crows caw, flies buzz by,
swallows are quiet after a morning of building —

their flight synchronised, not a feather touching
as they each fly in and out of their nest.

The grass is topped with white and yellow daisies,
buttercups, plantain, dock leaves and clover.

An aeroplane overhead and a single car break the silence.
